Biography

Rachael Mayne (b. 1986) is an Auckland-based artist known for her large-scale impressionistic garden and landscape paintings. Through expressive brushwork and layered colour, Rachael has developed a distinctive painterly language that evokes a sense of transcendence and wonder.

Rachael’s artistic practice has been deeply informed by her former career as a clinical psychologist. After years spent working alongside trauma and adversity, she returned to painting as a personal refuge and a way to find respite from the emotional intensity of her clinical work. Rachael began creating imagined gardens, gathering as much beauty, light, colour and movement onto the canvas as possible.

Her impressionistic paintings invite viewers into spaces that feel both familiar and dreamlike. Rather than illustrating specific narratives, they create room for viewers to bring their own memories and associations to the work. Collectors frequently describe a sense of nostalgia, recalling childhood gardens, family histories, and people they have loved and lost.

Rachael has work in private collections worldwide, including New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Japan, and Austria. Her work has been exhibited through numerous solo and group exhibitions in New Zealand and internationally. Rachael is currently represented by the Turua Gallery in Auckland, NZ.
